Ask any email
user and they will tell you the thing that annoys them the most about
working online is the volumes of spam that they get. And it's no longer
just a nuisance. Spam can seriously disrupt business communications. You have probably
seen an increase in the amount of spam which shows up in your email
box, or on your favourite newsgroup. The activities of a small number
of people are becoming a bigger problem for the Internet. Spam has
already become a global epidemic, costing businesses around the world
millions of wasted pounds a year.
As a complete
solution to spam protection, Cyber Sentry ensures that you have the
best cover available, and it requires no extra hardware or software.
Cyber Sentry works by passing your email through three distinct
scanning phases, namely:
- (Scan) scan the email for suspicious patterns and spam
characteristics
- (Tag) placing an invisible tag in the email (the email text is
not edited in any way)
- (React) reacting to the email depending on your pre-configured
settings
- (Log) all email that is quarantined or deleted is logged
This process is
done before your email before it gets to your company email server or
inbox.
Cyber
Sentry incorporates an e-mail content filter that identifies Spam by
analysing the headers, subject and text of an e-mail. Using its
rule base, it performs a wide range of heuristic tests to identify
spam. This rule base has been developed by our technology team over
the past three years and relies on the knowledge that we have gained
from scanning hundreds of millions of emails. As a particular email is
checked against these rules it is given a spam value which is
incremented every time the email fails a test.
After
scanning the email is tagged. This is done by adding a new line to the
email header. The line will list the spam value. This tag is invisible
to the end user and will not bee seen in the body of the email. This
tag will not tamper with encrypted or digitally signed email.
The
last phase will allow you to react to the scan results. You have the
choice of:
- leaving the email alone and allowing it to reach it's
destination
- tag it's subject line and then allow it to reach it's
destination
- quarantine the email and warn the recipient
- delete the email
The
Cyber Sentry system allows you to manage your thresholds which means
that you are always in control of your email. Most companies use a
graded system of thresholds to manage their spam. For example, email
with a low probability of being spam is allowed to its destination,
while email with a slightly higher probability is tagged. Email with a
higher probability of being spam can be quarantined or deleted.
Companies can also choose not to have any reactions performed by Cyber
Sentry. They can choose to use their own mail sever or inbox rules to
sort the email. Notes on how to do this can be found in our FAQ section.
All
email that is quarantined or deleted is logged in the administration
section of our web site. This log allows you to list the email and then
release it from the quarantine should you wish. This log system is also
a great way to monitor the sorts of email that your users get, allowing
you to pinpoint email offenders.
