Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's):

Additional Windows ME Cleaning Instructions:

Windows Millennium Edition (ME) has a feature known as System Restore, which creates backups of certain files in the _Restore folder. This feature typically backs up files with .EXE or .COM extensions. These file types are often targeted by viruses, therefore infected files can likely be found in the _Restore folder. However, files in the _Restore folder are protected and can only be accessed using System Restore. This feature must first be disabled before normal antivirus software can access and clean infected files in the _Restore folder.

The following instructions will disable the System Restore feature and allow you to clean a Windows ME system with Trend Micro antivirus.

  1. Right click the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties.
  2. Click the Performance Tab>File System button.
  3. Click the Troubleshooting Tab.
  4. Put a check mark next to the Disable System Restore.
  5. Click Apply>Close>Close.
  6. When prompted to restart the computer, click Yes. The Restore Utility is then disabled.
  7. Restart your computer in Safe Mode.
  8. Repeat the step 2 before the Additional Windows ME Cleaning Instructions, or browse the files located in the C:\_Restore folder and remove the file(s).
  9. After removing the desired files, restart the computer normally.
  10. To re-enable the Restore Utility, repeat steps 1-3
  11. Remove the check mark next to the Disable System Restore in step 4. The System Restore is then active again.
